I would like to speak about lab lessons in general. Firstly, I would like to talk about our participation in lab sessions. I feel that we do sometimes behave rather irresponsibly, for example the situation that I stated about my classmates mixing iodine in water and heating it up. I even saw one of my friends taking a video of someone dropping a test tube. I think that we should behave properly and do only what the teacher asks us to do. I actually also wonder why they are so bored to actually do silly things like these. Science lab lessons are the lesson that I look forward to most every week and I treasure the time I spend doing the experiments. When there is time left over, I will do the same experiment more than the supposed number of times to get an even more accurate result.
As for the experiments themselves, I find that most of them require me and my partner to wait for a long time before results can be seen so I feel that perhaps certain experiments that have quicker reactions can be arranged. Also, I hope that more experiments will be done by the students themselves because there are quite a number of cases when only the teacher is allowed to do the experiment.
Reflections on Science-related Sabbaticals
For both Terms 2 and 3, I joined sabbaticals that were related to science. Term 2 was Science Eureka while Term 3 was Environmental Science Studies - Green Learning Journeys and I thoroughly enjoyed both sabbaticals. Science Eureka was more of an introduction to what is taught in Upper Sec while Environmental Science Studies - Green Learning Journeys was showing us ways to be environmentally friendly in order not to face serious negative consequences. I felt that the former was good overall as the experiments kept me interested and it was never boring. As for the latter, I felt that since it was only the second time holding that sabbatical, it was good but in future, students should be given a chance to go to places like Pulau Semakau.
